It appears Putin has unraveled decades of progress. I am not referring to social and economic progress in countries like Ukraine. I am referring to the progress Putin had made in achieving his own goals. For decades he used disinformation propaganda to try to weaken the "Western liberal democracies". He fostered division in the United States between liberals and conservatives. He fostered division in Great Britain facilitating the country's exit from the EU. He supports any splinter group or faction seeking to divide countries and multi-national organizations because he knows that when they are all smaller, they will lack the power to stand against his plans.
But he miscalculated the response to his invasion of Ukraine. He never suspected that a "former comedian" could turn out to be a leader because he believes the only good leader is a leader that is strong and ruthless. He doesn't understand that charisma and integrity make a better leader.
The invasion has inspired the countries of the EU to strengthen their bonds. It has inspired global businesses and individuals to unite in their opposition to Russia and each do what they can to let Russia know they do not approve. The economic damage by global corporations against Russia may do more than the financial sanctions of countries to deter Russian aggression. Even the majority of people in Russia disapprove of war against their neighbors and the culture in the world that most closely resembles their own.
Putin misjudges human nature and the state of the world. His mind is probably rational, but he has long been making decisions on bad data and continues to be isolated from the truth by those close to him seeking to earn his approval. It is difficult to guess what conclusions he will draw and what actions he will take in response to his misinformation.
But we know the world has said, "Enough". We are tired of your lies and bullying. We want to see you punched in the mouth even if it hurts our hands in the process.
Liberal democratic ideas of freedom and justice can rally together and fight against the authoritarian regimes!
